I don't really like their design choice to make almost every room in this game super dark. Is there a way to mod it and make these areas brighter?
The easiest way is to adjust the flashlight's range or something.

just in case it is a result of a glitch, I wanted to check with you and see if you are running the game at over 60fps, because if you are, there seems to be issue that the game becomes way to dark, so switching to the 60fps or the 30fps options, instead of the variable option, should resolve the issue.
The only other thing I can think of is make sure you are using the correct brightness by correctly answering the prompts to adjust the ingame brightness; but the first thing is the issue for many...

The easiest way to make the game brighter is to open the options literally at any time- in the main menu, or in-game- and just tweak the settings manually. It can get pretty damn bright, so I usually keep most of the settings near the middle, or somewhat below the middle.

i think the op might be requesting a natural light to the rooms instead as upping the contrast via game can make it washed out.

Yeah, the brightness/contrast settings have nothing to do with the lack of lights on the ceilings and walls.

So, you have an issue with the lack of light sources? I'm trying to understand, because when someone says, "Is there a way to mod it and make these areas brighter," my first thought is that the person asking finds the game to be too dark, and need it to be brighter. And like I said, once I get up past the middle of the brightness sliders, it starts becoming TOO bright for my liking, and I need to make the game darker. And again, sticking with personal preferences, I honestly think the darkness with the ambient lighting is fine as it is. It creates an atmosphere of dread and foreboding that really sets the mood of 'holy shit, I'm gonna die'. So other than playing with the brightness settings, I really don't know what the question that's being asked is, or how it can be answered.
