could it be possible to use the d-pad for switching weapons, like say it automatically opened the inventory and equiped a weapon super fast then exited the inventory? Press Left D-pad to equip shotgun, Right D-pad to equip rifle (It doesn't need an animation like in RE5 it just needs to go through the inventory menu fast) check out this video to see an example:
If you skip to 4:30 or 9:10 in this video ^ you will see that the creator (albert) has edited out the inventory screens. He only did that for the video because he didnt want to show his incomplete work, its not actually playable like this, but you can see how cool it would be in the video! Just imagine if there was only a quick flash of black for a second when we switched weapons, and could keep playing without having to stop everytime we switch weapons, it would be sick!!! We dont need any actual animations, we just need to have a way to bypass the inventory screen or at least speed it up somehow
I know its not possible, but it could be like an auto-button script like "press left d-pad to open inventory, auto-equip shotgun and exit inventory" or "press up d-pad to open inventory, auto-equip rifle and exit inventory" in the fastest possible way (even if its not instant, it could still be cool)

BOO does it need an animation? even if the weapon just instantly disappeared and switched to a different one it would be cool! or what if the game still paused into the menu but only for a split second and automatically exited the menu with the new weapon selected? I dont think this would have to be a major game breaking/changing mod, its not like much needs to be added, just make it so 4 specific weapons can be preset to a hotkey on the dpad! then it can just go into the item screen instantly and then back out for you

Yes, mostly everything in RE4 needs animation, hair, cloth, etc.

but there is no animation, so obviously one is NOT needed... just skip the pause/item menu and BAM!
or like make it so, press dpad opens item menu and automatically selects 1 of 4 preset weapon choices, then instantly leaves the pause menu

In RE5 & RE6, there is an animation of your character reaching back behind them and pulling out their weapon. There ain't one in RE4 because your character supposedly switches weapons while your inventory is open. It seems that opening the inventory to do it would sort of defeat the purpose.

It's not possible, unless there will be mod which replaces RE5 or RE6 into RE4 but that would be stupid idea.

There was a proposed project a while ago that sought to bring most of RE4 into RE5 so as to utilize the latter game's mechanics. I don't think it ever got off the ground, or even past the drawing board. Even if it did, I imagine it would've been shut down.

I am not proposing re4 to play as 5 or to be remapped into 5, although it would be cool for co-op it would need to be redesigned from the ground up for higher ammo/kill ratio. I am simply asking for one little tweak of the user interface to reduce the number of times a player has to pause/visit the menu. We would still need to have the attache case and item combination system. I also do not think that this mod idea to the weapon switching system would change the gameplay much at all, only increase the flow of action during intense scenes!
Its sort of like an "auto-reload" type mod: when player runs out of ammo on current weapon, automatically switch to the next weapon in the attache case
I dont know much about modding, but if we could just figure out a way to bypass the attach case in ANY WAY what so ever, it would be really interesting

The game just won't allow it.
