Over the years I have come to realize why some people like the original Re1 more. And it's not just because of nostalgia goggles.
Excuse me but I'm going to just assume a lot of you have at least played both versions.
The thing that strikes me the most between the PSX version (Directors cut, too. Excluding my points about music.) and the Gamecube/Remastered versions is how different rooms look, but how much of the same the layouts are. There's something about the rooms in the Original version I can't put my finger on, but love. The colors, how vibrant they are. And how clean everything is. Combined with the soundtrack. Rooms seem to have high-ceilings, and a general un-easiness to them because of how empty of things needed to live there are. I guess it comes with the fact that the game was made in the 90's So that's probably why it has little to nothing in the rooms. The music works perfect for how it is though. Moving around in a weird and unknown mansion. Like; "What the hell there's no carpet." And "wait a sec wtf is up with this ceiling."
If I keep mentioning the ceiling it's because I love how tall the rooms are lol.
It feels more like a movie for sure I'd say. Hell, it was based on one.
Now with the REmake.
Everything seems very down to earth. Makes complete sense. Rooms are more dense, and definitely more realistic. Every room doesn't have an enormous amount of space and a high ceiling.
It's perfect for the theme of the remake. "Super Sp000ky, and serious".
And it works just fine.
But comparing and contrasting each game.
They both have their differences in tones. The original was less realistic, and had more of a mystery setting in my opinion. While the REmake was more of a general theme of surviving? I'd say adding more to the rooms was an evolution of technical advantages they could utilize. It's not bad that they added to the rooms, but I feel like a little of something that made the original special was lost. I'm not too sure on it. That's why I'd like to see other peoples views on it.
And the REmake doesn't have the same exact tone, which is good, but it's a remake. It depends on your view whether or not it's good or bad that they aren't 100 percent the same. (Though the gameplay changes are absolutely welcome, along with the addition of the death masks, self defense items, stuff like that.)
Please feel free to discuss this, I've been itching to talk about it for a while but I've never really gotten around to it.
