The patch 1.2.0 that released on February 28th, 2023 (yes, someone at Capcom actually wanted to update this game in 2023) this mod/method is entirely pointless. Resident Evil 5 now officially supports Split-screen in both story campaign, DLC episodes and Mercenaries.

~~This modification allows users to enable the split-screen game mode for story mode only.~~

Too run this patch, 2 pads are required in order to play.
The mouse/keyboard function has been disabled to minimize the amount of bugs it causes.
You can still play it with one gamepad and a keyboard emulating a 2nd gamepad.
This patch is NOT for pirates so BUY a LEGAL copy.
Works only on 16:9 aspect ratio.
"The Mercenaries" has been disabled due to unknown reason

--- Installation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

~~To install this patch, just follow the simple steps below.~~ Check the update (March, 2017)

1. Extract the .ZIP/.RAR using Winrar.
2. Go to your RE5 installation directory usually: C:\program files\CAPCOM\Resident Evil 5\
3. Drag 'n' drop all the archive contents into your RE5 installation directory. If administrative privilages are required; please allow them.

--- DX9/10 Configuration -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Users now have the ability to use a checkbox which determins where they want the game to be run in Dx9/10 mode.
The box appears upon start up.

--- Known bugs ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Some users will experience degraded graphical quality on the second player's screen. I believe the game does this automatically to maximize performance.
- Pause menu, due to additional options in the system setting menu; the description text overlays the buttons.
- Main menu and Costume Select don't show proper text (since the GFWL version is using the Steamworks version's .arc files

The keyboard can be used as controller using a virtual joystick program called VJoy.
The tutorial to set it up is in the updated .rar
The ReadMe.txt is will explain the process of adding and configuring a new virtual joystick.

The Steam version disables the god-awful GFWL. However the mod requires the original GFWL version.
The Steam version uses NativePC_MT while the original GFWL uses NativePC
I've had some problems with PPJoyKey on Windows 10. However VJoy also works.
The update includes:
- The original GFWL game files with the splitscreen mod
- Setup for Vjoy
- Control scheme based on RE4's for vJoy and a Picture
- shaderlog.slg (the game needs it for some reason)

With this mod you can switch easily between the Steam version and GFWL version
Just rename NativePC_MT to NativePC, backup the steam files and insert the GFWL ones with the splitscreen mod for when a friend comes over.
Then rename NativePC back to NativePC_MT, put the GFWL game files in a new folder and bring back the original Steam game files to play The Mercenaries Reunion, Lost in Nightmares and Desperate Escape.

Keep in mind:
I downloaded the Steam version and installed the GFWL version in a separate folder. Then I copied the files from NativePC to NativePC_MT without replacing any existing ones.
I think the only difference between the files is sharderlog.slg.
If there's any problem with some "missing" files just PM me and I'll send them over.

Well... I think Keyboard's P2 and Controller is P1
And you make a virtual controller using PpJoyKey and run it as administrator. (splitscreen.exe also as administrator)

Yep, first tried with Keyboard as P2 and Controller as P1, downloaded and installed PpJoyKey and didn't need to run as administrator as I am on the admin account and I use Windows XP SP3, the problem is still there. Game keeps changing from keyboard to controller whenever I press a key of the Player 2

If anyone's interested, I've found a way (well, I've simplified the way) of playing Mercs maps in co-op split-screen mode. It's a method that can be found here: .

The trick is a bit convoluted / hit and miss, but fortunately, once it works, the ability to play co-op s/s remains -- i.e., is saved by the game indefinitely until the "Chapter Select" option is again used and saved.

As such, what I've done is use a generic Live save available online for RE5 (username: "Christine") and saved over it with this Mercs mode active for co-op (*can be played in single-player too, actually). What it does is it glitches the game into playing Mercs maps and enemy spawns, but with story mode inventory / shop / progression. And, obviously, it can be played co-operatively via the split-screen modded executable. The only 'down' side (if you can call it that) is that there is no score, timer or rescue; so you have to exit and save at the end of the run / before you die.

This way, at least there's a kind of Mercenaries co-op mode for those who cannot get GFWL working (like myself) and until the Steam client patch drops for the game. The save also works with any modded Mercs map.

^ I didn't try versus, but I don't think so. The trick relies on the Mercs enemies and map being loaded when selecting "Continue" in story mode. If you enable the Versus option in the trainer, the game drops out as soon as it starts. At any rate, you need 4 players for Versus mode... no?

The game seems to be working from the launcher.exe when running DX9 but not DX10. When you use splitscreen.exe it automatically runs it as DX10 where there are a lot of missing files, so the game never launches because it only tells you one missing file at a time. I really want to see this mod work properly so I will help test anything whenever you update this and whenever I'm available.
