I've been here for awhile, and have noticed something. Besides reskins, the only real physical "mods" are ports of characters from other RE games.
My question is this, What makes this series so different to mod than something like Skyrim? Where a person just makes a character in 3DMax and puts it out.
Are we limited to getting something like Revelations 2, and only importing characters Or Resident Evil 6, and porting those from RE5?
I remember old RE4 mods on youtube, I'd see Heather from Silent Hill 3, Lien Neville from KOF, and many other models. Has porting characters from different games, like Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive, Dead Space, or Tomb Raider become an impossibility? When RE5 came out people were struggling to just get Excella ported in.
Have ports become harder to do since RE4's old PC version? And again, why aren't there any mods akin to Skyrim, where a person makes their own character, and puts it in the game. I never see that here, is it an impossibility? Or is it just merely difficult?

That`s a good question indeed. What i can think of is different engine.RE 4 is much older than Rev2,so logically that it has "better" mods.Modders spent more time on it.Ofcourse it should be easier to make mods for RE4 than for Rev2.If you are big mod user like myself, then you will notice that many old games have more mods than its newer counterparts. In Silent Hill 3 there was T-shirt retextures. In Homeconing i didn`t seen any.Deus Ex had some global mods, while Human Revolution didn`t had any. With all respect to modmakers.I do highly appreciate that they spend time on good mods, not always hard-made,but very usefull,i think most mods are just ports from other games, because of lack of skills.Texturer is much easier to find, than modeler.I can judge because i did some personal recolors of clothing for VTMB.It is arguable topic. You can recolor pants of character,or make new texture from nothing. With models it doesn`t work like that. Also, some people don`t like newer RE games, some just stopped playing games (lack of interest in gaming,RE or time).Simplier - They are gone. Ports from non-resident evil game is still possible for Revelations 2.

Skyrim is so easy to mod because the devs released the toolset for the game, which makes it extremely easy to mod in. Dragon Age: Origins did the exact same thing and that's why there's so many mods for those two games. For Resident Evil on the other hand, there is no toolset, and the game doesn't run on an easily editable engine such as Unreal or Unity. Because of this, modding is restricted to fan made tools which always have some drawbacks. Completely adding brand new models is possible, but it requires heavy mesh editing through 3DS Max and has to be run through multiple script just to get it working and even then at time it isn't successful.

I remember RE4UHD being released with models having a specific polygon count of no more than 20,000 making those wanting to important RE4 (2007) mods, due to this restriction many had to settle for mostly texture edits though I do think it's a general lack of interest moving on as well. RE4UHD, Remastered, and Revelations 2 all somewhat had a closer release ratio than that of RE4 to RE5. I might be answering my own question there in that regard.
I figured as much with a released toolset. Looks like that will require a lot of knowledge of scripting moreso than modeling itself to make your own personal 3D model into the game. Is it easier to port a character from another RE game due to it being made on the same MT Framework, than that of another series entirely like Tomb Raider or Silent Hill? The ports I do see are still ports, are people putting Rachel in -insert RE title here- because she's easier to cross over than say, Lara Croft?
I did see one modder make a GOW mod for RE4UHD, I should probably ask him. But at least I know it's possible. I was wondering why people never tried to mod hairstyles, or so on.

Yeah, it's easier to port RE characters because their facial animations and what not are rigged the exact same as models from the same engine and so forth. Importing a character from another game would require a TON of effort and time and the know how to do so. But yes, it is possible. Such as the Samus port for RE HD.
