you need arc tool (re6 section), with it you can unpack the model files - the texture files are called .tex -> you can convert .tex files with arctool too! (to .dds) - there is a free photoshop plugin from nvidia so you can load up dds files in photoshop, there you can change the textures and transform them back to .tex -> repack the model and it should have your changes inside

I'm also new like you and I trying to learn how to specifically mod characters models, so far I learned that every character has a file that contains it's meshes/textures listed here you need to extract these meshes/textures to be able to modify them you do this with ARCtool and its batch (PC) files, put these batch files alongside arctool.exe and drag and drop character's file over the batch file (run with) to extract (i do it over pc-re6-extract.bat cause there is no rev2 batch file that im aware of) then you it will create a folder at the root called ARCtool 0 which contains tex (texture) files as explained in the previous comment and meshes like uPl2200.mod for claire which is supposed to contain the mesh, then you need 3dsmax and activate this addon on it and import that mesh file with it. that's all i know. In my case, the problem is when I import gina(raid) body mesh (I believe its uPl3710.mod) I just get the skeleton and right hand mesh on it, what I wanted is to do some modifications in her outfit mesh like add an accessory to her body or something but I don't know how yet. Please can someone tell me how I can get the outfit on 3dsmax? I'm using 3dsmax 2016 btw

The easiest way to learn is honestly to look at tutorials. there are ones on youtube and some great ones on this sight that are brief yet explain it well. I have tried teaching someone through Steam chat/Skype and it just takes 10X longer. If you have specific questions though there is a question board under each game. Also I will try to sign on if anyone wants to message me, though I am no expert. I can do re-skins and model swaps mostly and show you some useful tools.
