Hey guys! You probably already know about how Deep Learning A.I. can affect and help in upscaling low resolution images and textures. I tried putting the background images from the Dreamcast version of RE3 into a tool called A.I. Gigapixel and with a few Photoshop touch-ups, the results are pretty neat: I can automate this process and the upscaling of all backgrounds would take less than an hour. Now I am not a modder so I don't know what to do with these files next. Is there anybody capable of injecting those images back into RE3 or an emulated version of that game?
Please don't judge me for my grammar. I'm from Germany

oh wow someone should make this with the Remake backgrounds !!!! and release a mod XD I did a small test using original backgrounds from the gamecube version. It´s a bit better than the upscaling that Capcom did, but not by much, the tech is great, it can clean some jaggies and sharpen things out, but it has flaws too, it can completelly destroy some details from the original image, so you need to go to photoshop a retouch a lot of things. at the end, i think the results aren´t good enough to justify all the work that would be extract , upscale, retouch, convert and repack again, every background in the game, not to mention those backgrounds that are small pre-rendered videos. anyways, here´s some screenshot to compare: Hey guys! I'm from Germany Try Dolphin emulator, you can easily dump and reload textures with it, but keep in mind that those background use alpha masks to "blend" character models in the scene, and deep learning A.I. can´t do much to improve those masks, so you would need to recreate manually, every mask for each of the backgound images. If you really wants better quality, you should check the japanese PC version of RE3 ,it uses background images with far better resolution than those in console versions.

Thanks a lot for sharing this, smalltimesaddler ! And don't worry, your English skills are perfect. Martins , did you photoshop the backgrounds used in your comparison shots? If not, the result is actually pretty impressive. Certain details truly pop out now compared to the original version and the Remaster. Not to mention how better the shadows and colours look thanks to the GC backgrounds (and as a colourblind, it definitely is a HUGE deal haha). Just out of curiousity, what kind of elements were destroyed during the upscaling process?
There are other examples here on how this technology improves various backgrounds from the RE franchise and they look great, especially those from RE2.
Btw, I'm not 100% sure, but as far as I'm aware the HQ backgrounds (640X480) in the PC version of RE3 aren't even used in-game. They're in the data, yes, but for some reason the team in charge of the port didn't -or couldn't- use them... so we're stuck with 320X240 pictures instead. The people working on the RE3 Restoration Project are working their ass off to solve that problem. Hopefully they'll find a way to solve this soon. Here's what it could look like with the HQ backgrounds:

Does any one of you have a download link to the backgrounds of the japanese PC version? I would love to check them out! I am going to ask in the Dolphin forums if someone is able to make use of the upscaled backgrounds. AFAIK someone already upscaled the RE2 backgrounds there (albeit with inferior scaling) and injected them back into the game. Speaking of which... the RE2 backgrounds tend to fall apart using my method. Also the first thing I tried to do was to upscale the REmake backgrounds but as Martins already mentioned, the results aren't thaaat much better than what Capcom did with REmake HD. In the meantime, here are some close-ups. They turn out nearly flawless! screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/128210/

Sorry, smalltimesaddler , I don't have them. The upscaled pics you shared look very good indeed! Regarding the REmake backgrounds, I have to disagree with you. The Capcom's remastered ones are bit blurry sometimes (thus lacking details), the colours also appear to be washed out. On the other hand, the ones you've extracted/upscaled from the GameCube version are more crispy, colourful and have a much better contrast. Just look at the wooden door, the walls and the paintings from the shots shared by Martins. I've only seen a few comparisons, so I may be wrong after all though. I know some backgrounds use videos, can videos also be upscaled thanks to that technology?

Nice work. A proper upscale of REmake would be awesome. Capcom destroyed tons of details in the remaster, you can see all the crushed blacks in those comparison shots
