Do people here consider skipping door animations as cheating? There seems to be a lot of dividing opinions on this based on the feedback I've received on the mod. There's also many speedrunners with different opinions about this (although from what I've heard, they all wish they could skip doors, they just wish it was an official feature so there'd be no reliance on modifying the game). Some quick information about how doors work: - Every single door, lift, and gate in the game lasts exactly 7 seconds. In a normal playthrough, this means you spend far more than one hour looking at door animations. In a good speedrun, around 30 minutes is spent looking at doors. - I haven't experimented with doors on PS1, but I suspect back then they were necessary for loading. - On GC, the real loading time is between 2-4 seconds, depending on the room. - On Wii, the real loading time is practically instant, meaning the door animations weren't useful for hiding loading times at all. - On PC, I suspect the real loading time is also virtually instant. The current mod doesn't actually remove the entire door animation, it'll show a black screen for a half second or so, and that's always enough time to load the room. I would say it is cheating, since it is something the game was not intended to have (without using a hack)
If it was a speedrun for the DS version - It wouldn't be cheating, since Capcom had that feature in the game originally..

If you mean cheating by skipping doors then what would it mean those people in the top scores where their play time is 0:00:00:00 and some ones 0:00:00:01 what then?!!!!!!!!! BTW thanks sectus that would be great

Yeah, I also think it's cheating. As you say, this can save about 30 minutes of gameplay, allowing to finish the game early than that provided. But this is convenient if you plan to record walkthrough, other did not have to watch all animations and this saves time of your video. So this is medal, which has two sides, good and bad things!

i personally do not think it is cheating, a thrid of a good speedrun is these door animations. which is non active gameplay, speedrunning is about going through the game as fast as possible and about the active gameplay where the speedrunner shows his/her skill at the game and knowledge not about watching 250+ door animations for 7 seconds each.
and like you said it's 7 seconds of doing nothing and there's almost no loading time anyway which is what they originally were for, they have lost their purpose.

Idk if I'd call it cheating but it certainly is a big disadvantage over speedrunners who don't have access to the mod.
I use it though and love it. Thanks for the hard work

I love this mod! Though I only use it if I'm not doing a speed run. So yeah, I guess it can be considered cheating.

Well said. Couldn't agree more. The only difference between this door-skipping and the one in DS version is that you need some external software. But, in essence, it's no different at all.

I don't think it's cheating either. I mean, the game doesn't need them anymore, so we are seeing doors that are in the way now. They serve no purpose other than nostalgia for the game released when it needed the doors, but they don't do anything special anymore...and not having them doesn't really give the average gamer a leg up other than a small amount of time not wasted. I say it's great! Shame we can't get just the sounds with it and no doors at all. Imagine if they had made it so you could just walk into the halls or through the mansion without transitioning into new rooms at all!
Too hard on the engine though, really. Anyway, no doors ftw! ^_~

I would say it's cheating, since it's part of the original designs of the games, if the scenes are taken away allowing the player to achieve a shorter play time, then it's a form of cheating. When you think about it, the best speedrunner in the world uses this cheat, that allows him/her to be the record holder, now what about the other person who achieved a similar time but didn't skip door scenes, instead he/she played the game, in it's original state. surely that person deserves to the record holder not the person who changed the way the game is coded etc in order to get ahead? That's my view on it.

In terms of speedrunning, yes its cheating. Because you can achieve better times then people without this mod. But gameplay wise, no cheating at all. Its just annoying to watch this animation every time when you already beaten the game like 20 times

No, its not cheating. I remember something someone told me on a message board a long time ago; games are for fun, there is no reward for completing them the 'right way', and no one is going to be impressed by how you finished a game or on what difficulty level you did it on. As long as you're not modding or changing the game for multiplayer, you can (and should) do whatever you want with it to make it more enjoyable for you. With door skipping, I suppose some people would consider it cheating to use it to get the 'finish the game in 3 hours/5 hours' achievements, but again, no-one is going to care about those. If you're worried about it, you should get those achievements first, and then install the door skipping mod. The question you need to ask is; will it make the game better for you? If the answer is yes, you should do it. If the Resident Evil police come round, you can blame me.
