I recently beat this neat little indie game called "Dust: An Elysian Tail" and haven't had a place to really talk about how I felt about it, so I figured I'd just make a little discussion thread here.
The game is fairly impressive due to the fact that the majority of it was made by one guy. He did the mechanics, and artwork for the game. It took him four years, but people LOVED it on XBLA. The game is a 2D metroid-vania-esque platformer RPG brawler mix. It's incredibly story driven, and the story is pretty well written.
"Immerse yourself in a gorgeous hand-painted world on a search for your true identity. As the mysterious warrior, Dust, your action-packed journey will take you from peaceful glades to snowy mountaintops and beyond. At your disposal is the mythical Blade of Ahrah, capable of turning its wielder into an unstoppable force of nature, and the blade's diminutive guardian, Fidget. Battle dozens of enemies at once with an easy-to-learn, difficult-to-master combat system, take on a variety of quests from friendly villagers, discover ancient secrets and powerful upgrades hidden throughout the massive, open world, and uncover the story of an ancient civilization on the brink of extinction as you fight to uncover your own past."
Above is what it says on the Steam page. A lot of this is accurate, other than the "difficult to master" bit about the combat. It's pretty simple, as most of it is hit order, or timing when it comes to parrying attacks. And the world isn't super huge, but it's fairly large for what the game is.
There's a lot of secrets in the game, and lots of backtracking due to new abilities, but despite that, on my first playthrough of the game I found it fun enough to actually get 117% completion, which means finding everything and doing everything. The voice acting is pretty good, though quality does dip, and the soundtrack is very nice in my opinion. It is one of the best games released in recent years, and some of the things that the creator did for the port put AAA devs to shame. There are 3 different ways to play: Keyboard, keyboard and mouse, or controller. The three playstyles are all equally viable, and really depends on your preference. The graphics options are also pretty well done, as they include tool tips, and a pretty good selection that make sense for the style of the game.
I really really liked this game, and I would definitely recommend it if you have the $15 (or your regional equivalent) to spare.
