Ethan was a poorly conceived character, but I think that was because of the decision to go "VR", as the game was now presented in the first person, they felt they could skip fleshing out the character, since you are supposed to literally be that character, and thus Ethan is really not anything but what your own personal imagination says he is...
As such, he has only been given the overtly too familiar motivation, that was taken directly from Silent Hill... he is on a mission to find his dead wife after mysteriously receiving a communication from beyond the grave... Ultimately the title, is such a smaller experience compared to almost every other Resident Evil to have come before it, offering almost zero replay value, and having almost no variety for the game play. It's only successes are that it correctly copied the ui elements of the classic Resident Evil (giving it some survival horror vibes) and creating a solid "VR" experience (far better then any VR experience to come before it).
Now I said in the past, the opening of the game despite the cribbing of Silent Hill's plot is very strong and varied but,it is not long before you come to find yourself doing the same thing over and over again with no variation (literally the same blob monster over and over again...) and if you are not using a VR headset, then you will find the experience as a traditional game sorely lacking. Lastly, another a major issue I had with this title, is that it had nothing to do with it's sequel... they hinted initially it would, They even included things like talking to Ada Wong over the phone in the first demo released on PS4 and then they added after the fact, a DLC that tried to make up for the fact that it had no Resident Evil in a Resident Evil title, after it was already released... by bringing back one of the characters, and yet he did not look like or sound like the character that the game said he was; thusly they created decent enough survival horror game, but a weak Resident Evil sequel.
Village, looks like they have addressed the variety issue, and further it looks like the game world will be more vast... definitely influenced by RE4 and imagine this time around they are trying to do a better job of bringing Resident Evil into their Resident Evil game, they even reversed themselves and made that one re character this time around look like that character from the established games, so maybe, just maybe this time around, they have made this sequel worthy of the Resident Evil name... it won't be long now before,we get that answer.
