I am trying to learn how to mod games, or at least understand how they work on some level so I can use them effectively. I have tried using the Nexus Mods manager and it didn't affect the game I was trying to alter which I'm sure is due to my lack of understanding of mods and how they work. I am a longtime gamer though I don't have any experience coding or programming. Something I have wanted to do is import other characters into Resident Evil 5, I am new to modding so I am not sure what is or isn't capable, I am only sure o f what I have seen, and I've watched a lot of mods on Youtube of characters in the game, like Spencer. Jill, Wesker, Sheva, Chris etc. being replaced by models of other characters. (Here's a videos of what I mean [ ]. I've even seen models from Resident Evil 6 imported into Resident Evil 5 and vice versa. A quick example many people would likely be universally familiar with would be having Mr. X's model swapped out for Pennywise in the Resident Evil 2 remake.
I was led to believe that in some way, in order to do this, all one needs to do is swap the model of the actual character in the game (located in a folder somewhere on your computer) and import the other one in and name it the same as the one there previously. Could anyone help me make sense of how to do this please? I very much would appreciate it as well as any videos or references that could help simplify understanding/ learning it. Also, would this work on the version of the game I own on steam? (Re5 Gold Edition) Thanks so much for your time!

Pardon me that I don't quite understand your question. But do you want to install mod OR create mod yourself? Because these 2 are drastically different. For the former, you just download the mod you want, and usually it comes with an instruction on how to use/install, which is mostly copy/paste on the right directory or tell you to use mod manager. The mod managers are there to help you install/uninstall easier and also auto-backup your original files. Modern games like RE7-RE3 specifically requires mod manager for installation because game files are stored differently. For Resident Evil games, this mod manager by FluffyQuack pretty much cover all of them : residentevilmodding.boards.net/thread/507/fluffy-manager-5000-v1-800
