The last two Resident Evil games (RE7 and RE2) have all relied on finding three items to progress through the next stage (dog heads and crests). There is a similar mechanic to this in REmake3: the jewel boxes. Using the jewels, key items can be unlocked until eventually a key item to get to the substation (or something like that).
The three jewels unlocking the path forward would be a very RE thing to have.
Until, or if, door behavior can be modified to create new key items, these three jewels could unlock the cutting tool, kendo's gate key and lockpick in order. Incorporating the more expansion mod. The first jewel can be found somewhere in the level without any key item and this would unlock the cutting tool. The second jewel would require unlocking some chains around the area to find this jewel and this would unlock the gate key to Kendo's where beyond the third jewel would be found which would unlock the lockpick.
It would be nifty if door behavior can be modified to create new key items and new safe combinations can be created but until then.

Very good idea. Unfortunately, I am not yet so experienced that I could implement this.

I was also saddened that the backtracking was only for consumer items; gunpowder, herb, ammo...
