Hi y'all.
One thing I always missed in the remake were live action cutscenes that better represented the characters outside of a few polygons and captured that Romero-esque horror movie atmosphere that inspired the series. With that I have brought back all the original live action cutscenes, bar the very opening menu video, in all their low res, blue mist filled glory.
DOWNLOAD NOW - MEDIAFIRE (1.8GB!)
I have scaled up the videos from the full colour, 10fps, 320x240 PC originals and hopefully smoothed them out as much as I know how - providing both original 4:3 and filled 16:9 aspect ratios, just like the REmake, with certain individual shots panned to better suit the widescreen framing. The download is a pretty hefty 1.8GB, including all three copies of the video for different resolutions as the game requires. Audio is in stereo, although has to be in a 6 channel audio file for the game to use it properly, so if they're spread on weird speakers in 5.1 let me know! I cannot test it myself. They should just be left and right front channels.
Due to the game seemingly running its own timer when playing a video to determine when to move on, and not use the actual video or audio length, I had to adjust them slightly to match. That means minor edits to the first sequence to remove about 15 seconds in total, but hopefully you'll never really notice - it's still far less cutdown the PS release! The original "there are only three of us left now" moment has been cut as the game generates its own after the initial sequence. The endings also do not include the helicopter leaving, which in this version of the game is a separated video, but fade into the chopper scenes, with the synth ballad soundtrack, afterwards. The helicopter leaving cutscene (showing the house blowing up or not) I decided to keep as the updated CGI version because the rest of the CGI scenes were also kept, and the differences in length between the original and remake segments were a little problematic to smooth out satisfactorially.
Anywho, for those who want an experience that is the best of both worlds, enjoy!
